Some music cannot be found on a map or within iTunes categories. Some music is so original it seems snatched from the great, invisible substrata that runs below all human activity, a sound aching to be born without a flag or fixed allegiance – free, questing, overflowing with immediate, tangible life. This is the music of Toubab Krewe, the vibrant Asheville, NC-based instrumental powerhouse that creates a sonic Pangaea that lustily swirls together rock, African traditions, jam sensibilities, international folk strains and more. While nearly impossible to put into any box, it takes only a few moments to realize in a very palpable way that one is face-to-face with a true original who recognizes no borders in a march towards a muscular, original, globally switched-on sound.
‘Toubab Krewe’s take on African music is about as good as it gets without buying a plane ticket’ - Jon Pareles, New York Times

On Mardi Gras morning, your eyes may feast on the intricate and elaborate beadwork of the Indians as they dance down the street, but the first thing you'll hear when they make their way toward you is the back line, known as "the rumble". Featuring seven GRAMMY-nominated musicians, The Rumble is more than just a band — it's an opportunity to be immersed in a wholly unique facet of New Orleans culture. Composed of Second Chief Joseph Boudreaux Jr. of the Golden Eagles, trumpeter Aurélien Barnes, trombonist José Maize Jr., bassist TJ Norris, guitarist Ari Teitel, keyboardist Andriu Yanovski, and drummer Trenton O’Neal, the group fuses iconic New Orleans funk in the vein of The Meters and The Neville Brothers — but updated, modern and vibrant befitting the next generation — with electrifying brass and the singular visual splendor of the Black Masking carnival tradition.

"For my last album, I wanted to throw the funkiest, freakiest, messiest going away party I could for myself,” declares rap legend LYRICS BORN about his upcoming exit from the music space to further explore other entertainment realms. “I'm saying what I want to say, and then I'm boogie-ing my ass out the door.” Before he waves ‘sayonara’ to his illustrious musical career that stretches over three decades from his start as part of the iconic Northern California hip hop collectives SoleSides and Quannum Projects in the ‘90s to his solo joints in the ‘00s and onward, Lyrics Born will be releasing one final album, Goodbye, Sticky Rice on October 25th, 2024 via his label Mobile Home Recordings.
Starting in the late ‘90s as a vital part of the intensely influential Bay Area hip hop collective Quannum Projects that spawned DJ Shadow, Blackalicious, Lifesavas and Latyrx, of which he was half with Lateef the Truthspeaker, Lyrics Born broke countless “first” barriers as the first Asian-American solo rapper to perform at Lollapalooza, Coachella, release a greatest hits record, to name a few firsts. There was never a glass ceiling that he wasn’t able to break. He has established himself firmly among the upper echelon of indie Hip Hop artists. In 2022, Rolling Stone listed his debut album Later That Day as one of the "200 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of All Time." He also holds a place in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest West Coast Hip-Hop Songs of All Time" with his biggest hit to date "Callin' Out."

THIS IS A LATE SHOW FRIDAY MAY 2.
(Technically this show starts early morning Saturday May 3.)
Doors 1:00AM / Show 2:00AM
Advance Tickets $30 + Processing Fees & Applicable Taxes at Checkout.
Over the course of seven studio albums and countless shows around the world, Marco Benevento has amassed a devoted fanbase, while drawing praise from tastemakers far and wide. Los Angeles Times has written, “it’s safe to say that no one sees the keyboard quite like Marco Benevento’s genre-blind mashup of indie rock, jazz and skewed improvisation,” while NPR Music raves that Benevento combines “the thrust of rock, the questing of jazz and the experimental ecstasy of jam,” and Rolling Stone praises “the textures and colors available in his keyboards and arsenal of manipulated pedals and effects along with his deceptively rich, catchy melodies and straight-ahead grooves.”
Indeed, Benevento’s music covers a wide swath of ground, connecting the dots in the vast space between LCD Soundsystem and Leon Russell, His songwriting is smart and earthy, yet pulsating with dance rock energy. Benevento’s high energy live shows have led to numerous high profile appearances, ranging from Carnegie Hall to Pickathon. In the studio, he’s collaborated with the likes of Richard Swift, Leon Michels and Joe Russo among others.
On his latest studio album, simply titled, ‘BENEVENTO,’ the Woodstock, NY- based artist dives deep down a psych funk rabbit hole, reimagining the current Zeitgeist of these troubled times through surrealistic optimism and the pure joy of an irresistible groove on tracks like “At The End Or The Beginning,” “Winter Rose” and “Do You Want Some Magic?”

Kermit Ruffins needs only two words to hype a New Orleans barroom for one of his weekly shows, and this, his personal slogan, sums up what this Big Easy ambassador is all about. From playing himself in the HBO Series Treme, to barbecuing outside his bar, Kermit’s Treme Mother-inLaw Lounge, to sitting in with Jon Batiste and Stay Human on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the trumpeter/vocalist keeps himself busy when he isn’t on stage doing what he does best—entertaining and sharing his love of life with the world. He personifies the laid-back vibe of New Orleans.
